How to skilfully choose the right course & take control of your own destiny

Headshot of Joe Casey Career Guidance Consultant

Sometimes choosing what direction to take
can feel like standing at a crossroads with a dozen signposts and no clear map.
On top of that everyone has an opinion, perhaps the deadline is creeping closer
and you’re meant to know what you want to do with your life.
But making a good decision isn’t magic or luck,
it takes skill.
And like any other,
this skill gets better with structure, practice and reflection.
This guide walks you through that structure,
so your choices feel
less like a guess and
more like a grounded, confident decision
and it feels right.
To skilfully choose the right course involves 3 key issues and these are all about you;
- Personal deciders / influences
- Learning preferences &
- Skills development
Personal deciders & influences might include:
Something you love doing or
A special burning interest.
What you devote a lot of your leisure time to.
A past achievement or experience that you wish to build-on.
Particular personal qualities, attributes & strengths.
Any other factor or need which must be met in your choices and final decision.
So,
Start by identifying what matters hugely to you?
Learning preferences:
All courses and careers are about knowledge and know-how
so it make sense to choose the learning you most like.
And this should involve subject-types you have a preference for.
So,
What learning do you like the most?
Skills:
There is great satisfaction in developing skills.
Skills lead to accomplishments
and these are far more important to success in life than IQ.
The discipline and fulfilment
in learning how to do anything really well
improves your life,
life chances and opportunities.
All courses & training involve development of specific skills
and you need to know about these particular skills before you commit.
So,
Are they right for you, do these skills sound like a good fit?
 Happiness, contentment and success
depend a lot on getting the opportunity
to develop your talents, interests and skills
in an role/discipline/career you’re genuinely most interested-in
and can see as a true expression of you.
So,
to skilfully pick the right course or career direction
you must identify your personal influences, your learning and skills preferences.
Know that whatever you do in life will be a challenge
and no challenge worth accepting comes without a cost -
yeah, think 'hard fun'.
You need to find the challenge that's right for you -
relish the adventure you set for yourself
and take control of your own destiny.
These challenges give your life purpose,
meaning,
opportunities for success and
ultimately become
your story.
I hope you found this useful.
