1. Start with Your Interests

null

If you like and have enjoyed a subject or two so far, jot it down first on a 'My LY Subjects' list

2. Consider Your Career Goals

What career or course currently appeals to you? Write it down on a separate 'My careers & Courses' list

  • CareersPortal

    4. Be Strategic About Challenging Subjects

nullSometimes it's wise to be brave and take a subject in the Leaving Cert rather than avoid it, especially when it's listed as a significant part of the college course you're aiming for.

    5. Get Reliable Information

nullBe careful about listening to others' opinions about a subject. It's better to get information yourself:
  • null
  • Try the 'School' section of CareersPortal
  • null
  • Select 'Leaving Cert' section and click on 'Leaving Cert Subjects' descriptions
  • null
  • Talk to the teacher if you have further questions

    6. Assess Your Learning Style and Strengths

nullLook at what you'd be learning and consider the skills involved with each of your preferred subjects. Be honest with yourself about your suitability:
  • null
  • Will it build on your strengths?
  • null
  • Will you need to put in extra work to do well?
  • null
  • How do you learn best and how committed are you?

The insights from aptitude tests and skills questionnaires can help if you are unsure – we can help with all of this.

nullnullIt makes sense to bundle 2 or 3 subjects together if you have an interest in a particular area. This can better prepare you for what's ahead. Consider taking more than just one:
  • null
  • Arts/Humanities subjects
  • null
